Club Five is one of the nicest medium-sized clubs in DC. With two
levels inside--including a dance floor with the cleanest, most
powerful sound system around and a great mezzanine level--and a
beautiful rooftop deck, we think people are really going to love the
feel of it. The roof deck is partially open--so that it can be a
legal "smoking area" come January 1st--but it is also well-heated, so
unless it's raining, we will keep it open even when it's cold
outside, which will give us a second music space as well. For the
first few weeks, if the deck is open the music will be supplied but
the DJs already on the schedule. Once we go fully weekly, we may have
some regular rooftop DJs on call...

A personal message from the promoters:
When Nation closed, there were offers from several venues around DC
to move Alchemy, but we passed on all of them at first because we
couldn't do -Alchemy- unless we had two good-sized dance floors and
other elements we thought had been part of the event from the
beginning. So, it was only when Club Envy came along that the group
decided we could actualy make a go at keeping "Alchemy" running in a
new venue. We made a go at it, but there just weren't enough people
who felt comofortable with the venue and its location to make it work.
After that, it was honestly fairly easy to think, "we'll, we have
tried our best, and done a lot more in 6-1/2 years than any of us
ever expected," and walk away. But we both realised a rather odd
fact--in spite of all the hassles with Envy, he had both had some of
the most fun nights -DJing- of our entire careers. Though there were
not enough people there most weeks to fill that huge space, the
people who were coming out were determined to have a good time, and
their enthusiasm kept us up even when everything else pretty much
sucked. We -wanted- to keep DJing, we just didn't want to have to
build a club from the ground up every week to do it, or have to keep
asking our patrons to "hang in there" any further.
Luckily had one of the premier medium-sized venues in town offering
us that exact opportunity...it just can't be "Alchemy" any more...so
now we're trying something completely different.
That said, we also decided that we were going to go against "common
wisdom" in promoter-land and be completely up front about what we
plan to do, what we don't plan to do, and what we need from -you-,
the patrons for this to work.
Given the fact that we only have one dance floor we -know- will be
open every week, we can't do "Alchemy" at Club Five. We are going to
try to make Chronos as much fun as possible for people who -want- a
place to have fun, though, but it's going to be a different dynamic
than Thursday nights have been for a long time. We have decided that
trying to list the growning number of musical sub-genres which have
become part of "the scene" is pointless, because even then everyone
has their own interpretation of "goth" or "synthpop" or "industrial"
or whatever. So, show up and -request- what you want to hear. We plan
to mix it up, but ultimately the music we spin each week is going to
depend -heavily- on who shows up because there's only one dance floor
and it has to be moving all night if we want to even -try- to give
everyone time to get their stomp/goth/oontz/groove/etc on.
But, if ppl must have labels--you're gonna hear some old, overplayed
goth/industrial songs, some brand new stuff you might not know, some
80's and some metal, some electroclash and indie, some ebm, some
noise and maybe a little dark trance. You might hear Johnny Cash, you
might hear some random inscrutable Japanese song...as long as we see
our friends on the dance floor -having fun-, we're not going to hold
back from playing anything. So, point blank--if you are the slightest
bit picky in your tastes, you're gonna probably here some music you
don't like. *Get over it.* Our only goal can be to promise that we
will endeavour each week to play enough of the music you -do- like to
give you a fun time. To that end, we're going to be as request-
friendly as we possibly can, so -please- make requests--and make them
as soon as you get to the club to give us time to work them in.
After we announced that Alchemy was ending, quite a number of people
contacted us and said things similar to, "We would have come out
more, but we just assumed Alchemy would always be there so it was
easy to be 'too busy' to make it out. We would have come more if we
knew it wasn't a guaranteed thing at the new venue." So, right up
front, let's be clear--if you like the event we're offering, and you
want a fun, safe place to go on Thursdays, we need -you- to be there.
Since we're starting off with only 3 weeks out of the next six, if
you're in town those three weeks we ask that you please try to show up.
Club Five's management -knows- our crowd, and they -want- our crowd
to be their new Thursday night crowd. For everyone who wants a
Thursday night where you will feel safe, feel appreciated by the
venue, and feel free to -just have fun-, we could not have asked for
a better opportunity than this. The rooftop lounge will be a great
bonus for our friends who smoke once 2007 begins, and just in general
a unique, fun place to hang out, so we're also really looking forward
to seeing what we can do with it.
We thank all the people who came out and put up with the crap at
Envy, and to the people who at least tried to put up with it but
found they just couldn't have a good time going there. We hope we'll
see -all- of you at Five in the coming weeks.
